Navidad and Año Nuevo in San Pedro is dominated by fiestas, and an integral part of the celebrations involves 'convite'; essentially a dance competition where locals dress up in all manner of costumes and custom-made masks from tinkerbell to supermario brothers. Celebrations kick off mid-afternoon in the main basketball court, with the dramatic backdrop of the San Pedro Volcano, setting the scene. Between 30-50 local residents, spanning the demographics, dance to blaring music and the event culminates in a dance-off later on in the evening, where participants reveal their masks to a huge audience.
